Dr. Shamsul Arfin Qasmi becomes First Pakistani Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP)
Pakistan Biological Safety Association (PBSA) congratulates Dr. Shamsul Arfin Qasmi for becoming the first Pakistani to pass the Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP) exam and thus become the first CBSP of Pakistan.
CBSP exam is hosted by ABSA international and involves the following aspects:
For years the practitioners of biosafety have come from many different disciplines. It was usually determined that there was a need for someone to oversee the institution’s biohazards operations. It was a position born out of necessity and was usually given over to either a senior research scientist with some background in microbiology or to the safety professional with no background in biological work. The field of biosafety has become defined and refined over the years. Research has become very complicated with rDNA work and highly infectious organisms, the threat of bioterrorism, and emerging diseases. Many institutions now require that individuals overseeing biohazard and rDNA work be competent, educated, and have proper experience.
ABSA International offers a Registered Biosafety Professional (RBP) and certification Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP) program to recognize biological safety professionals.

Dr. Qasmi is also a former alumni of the American Society of Microbiology (ASM) “52 Weeks of Biosafety” Training. Dr. Qasmi is a founding member of Pakistan Biological Safety Association (PBSA) and since 2008 has been a pillar of biological risk management endeavors in the country.
We congratulate Dr. Qasmi for his contributions to biological risk management and for his constant support of PBSA’s endeavors.
