PBSA Sindh Chapter Meeting (Marriott Karachi, 18 May 2019)

Pakistan Biological Safety Association (PBSA) Sindh Chapter Meeting was held in Marriott Karachi on May 18 2019. The major focus points were sustainability of PBSA and future endeavors towards spreading the message of biological risk mitigation in all provinces of Pakistan. There was also a discussion about the need to increase biosafety and biosecurity awareness in interior Sindh, where mortality due to negligence of biological risk mitigation has resulted in significant loss.

A cake cutting ceremony was also conducted in appreciation of the efforts of Dr. Shahida Qureshi. Dr. Shahida Qureshi (Lab Supervisor in Aga Khan University) will be shifting to Lahore and handing the chapter roles and responsibilities to Dr. Aneeta Hotwani and Dr. Saima Saleem. She also appreciated the growth of PBSA and looked forward to sharing her experience with PBSA Punjab Chapter.

Dr. Qasmi, General Secretary PBSA, was appreciative of the efforts of the Bioprism trainers, Sindh Lifetime Members, and the effort of Dr. Shahida to making biosafety important in Pakistan.

Being elected as the President of Pakistan Biological Safety Association (PBSA) is a true honour for me. I believe that promoting awareness, knowledge and understanding of biosafety at the regional and national level is responsibility of each member and trainer of the PBSA. This organization is commended in many of the national and international forums for its preventive training for Risk Assessment and management, that was much needed at the time of COVID-19 outbreak. Additionally, it has promoted strong collaborations and affiliations with various Biosafety developmental programs that align with international standards to acknowledge and recognize biosafety as a separate scientific discipline within Pakistan. I strongly agree that “no one is safe until everyone is safe”, and would like to work with the PBSA team to implement this approach as far and wide as possible.
